Some people use toothpaste to clean the outside of their flute but my teacher said she doesn't recommend that!
Inside-Cleaning rods are good, I put it in a sock or wrap a bandanna around the stick. You can get bandannas at Walmart or any craft store. Ask your band teacher - they MOST LIKELY sell them. They are also called swabs.
**Blow hot air on it (like with your mouth), then take a soft cloth and buff it. It makes the outside of your flute REALLY shiny. Make sure you polish the brownish looking part, It will help it sound nice and be able to get off easily...
**If its hard to put together and take apart your instrument (like its stuck), put petroleum jelly (vasaline) on the ends. Let it sit for about a minute then buff it with a dry paper towel. That should make it easier to put together and take apart.
